1. Loch Ness
First on the list is a place that needs no introduction – the immense and mysterious, Loch Ness. With its deep, sparkling waters surround by miles of thick forests, Loch Ness is an awe-inspiring site to behold. A day out here would likely involve an adventure through the ancient ruins of Urquhart Castle (more on that later), a hike along the hilled forests for some awesome views and if you’ve got the time, a scenic boat tour over the serene water.
However, as you may know, Loch Ness is not just famous for its beauty – it’s also home to the legendary Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie as the locals like to call her. She hasn’t been spotted in a little while so if you are feeling adventurous and fancy catching a glimpse of her, then pack a camera (and maybe some binoculars) and get out on the water. We’d also recommend taking a picnic as you might be waiting a while for her to make an appearance!
2. Urquhart Castle
On the shores of Loch Ness sits the iconic Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s most famous and revered ancient fortresses. Although mostly ruins now, Urquhart Castle has always found itself at the forefront of many of Scotland’s most dramatic events ranging from the Wars of Independence, the Jacobite Uprising and into the modern day – it definitely has some stories to tell.
Not only is there a wealth of Scottish history to learn here, its breathtaking surroundings also make it an absolute must visit location. The castle can be easily reached by car or bus from Inverness but for those wanting to heighten their experience, there is also the option of taking a cruise ship from the city, which travels down the loch and arrives right at the castle docks.
3. Fort George
Built in the mid-1700s to deter the unruly Jacobites, the mighty Fort George is without doubt the best example of 18th century military engineering anywhere in the UK. Its strategic location on a next to the Moray Firth made it an impregnable fortress against anyone stupid enough to think about attacking it.
Although the days of a highland rebellion are long gone, the vast fortress is still incredibly well maintained to this day due to the fact that it is still actually a functioning military barracks – so you better be on your best behaviour!
4. Falls of Foyers
Although not as well know as other places on this list, the Falls of Foyers on the southern banks of Loch Ness is a fantastic sight to behold and very easy to get to.
For centuries, this spectacular waterfall has wowed visitors with its beauty and power as they witness the falls come crashing down over the cliffs and drop 150ft into the small lagoon below. We visited on a dry day and the falls were still in good flow but to see the falls at their most impressive pay them a visit after a period of high rain.
To access the Falls of Foyers from Inverness, travel along the less touristic south side of Loch Ness until you hit the tiny village of Foyers. Here you will notice a small café and car park that sits just across the road from the entrance to the falls. The path is all downhill and the walk should only take about 15 minutes.
5. Fyrish Monument
Located close to Inverness, the magnificent Fyrish Monument can be seen from miles around as it stands proudly on a prominent hill overlooking the Cromarty Firth.
Built to replicate the gate of an Indian fortress, the Fyrish Monument has an incredible story to match its incredible look. During the time of the highland clearances, the employment rate was very low and starvation was a real threat. In order to keep as many people paid and fed as possible, a local lord ordered that the monument be built just so that he had an excuse to pay them.
And if local legend is to be believed, it is also said that when the labourers dragged the rocks to the top of the hill the lord would roll them back down to the bottom meaning that the project took longer and he would be able to pay them for the additional time.
6. Inverness Castle
In the heart of the Highland capital you’ll find Inverness Castle. This imposing building has a rich history and stunning architecture that makes it one of Inverness’s most visited attractions. The castle, which was originally built in the 11th century, has been reconstructed multiple times over the centuries and for the last two hundred years has actually served as the city’s courthouse.
The castle is undergoing major renovations which are expected to be completed by 2025 however visitors can still enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the city, the River Ness and the surrounding hills from the castle grounds.
7. Culloden Battlefield
On the 16th of April 1746, the infamous battle of Culloden took place just a few miles east of Inverness. The fighting that happened on that fateful day is widely regarded as one of the most significant events in Scottish history as it marked the end of the Jacobite Rising and the decline of the highland way of life.
Today there is an impressive visitor centre on the site containing a wealth of information, including interactive exhibits, displays, and monuments that help to bring the events of the battle to life. Visitors can also explore the real battlefield itself which contains markers of where each clan fell.
8. Inverness Botanic Gardens
Just a stones throw from the centre of Inverness is a hidden gem of the city – the Inverness Botanic Gardens. This hidden oasis is the perfect spot for a bit of peaceful relaxation, and in the cold winter months the heated Tropical House is a welcome respite from the brisk weather.
Despite its small size, the Inverness Botanic Garden is packed full of interesting plant life and gorgeous displays making it definitely worth a visit.
